Our Fishing Trip to Stone Town Zanzibar
We went fishing near Stone Town at the end of December 2010. I went with three other friends, Mike, his brother Mark Solomons and Alex. We also had two local African guides with us. The boat was a very traditional wooden boat that you find on the island, they are often call water-taxis and they have a cover in the middle to keep the sun away. The small boat was called the Gladiator 2. Our friend Alex who spoke Swahili contracted the boat for 100 dollars U.S. for four hours. It was a good deal considering that sport-fishing in the big yachts is very expansive. For a group of six people, it can cost you as much as a thousand dollars per boat.
We went a couple of kilometers away on the wooden boat from the coast. The water was a couple of meters deep and we passed many of commercial fishing boats. There was a boat pulling the nets and some fisherman were in the water. Right away Alex started getting sick and he started throwing up. The waves and the wind picked and the boat started swinging from side to side like a school swing. Although, the sun was out.
The guides gave us a roll of strong fishing line and we put some small fish for bait. We did not use a reel. The fishing was not great, I did not catch nothing. Mike and Alex caught some tiny fish, I was teasing them that those would have lookek in a small aquarium. They fought back and told me that at least they ahd caught something. Mark was the star, he caught a couple of fish one was a beautiful red one with blue dots .The guides'experience seemed to pay off because they caught more than we did. I noticed after awhile that they were very generous with the bait on their lines, but they only gave us a little bit of bait. I decided to put more bait but it still did not do a difference. We pondered if we should leave early because Alex was so sick but we decided to stay are allowed time. I was very happy when we put a stop to fishing and we went to beautiful Sandbar island for a swim. Next Sandbar Island. |
